ROCK - Camel Estuary Cornwall

Rock

Rock is a popular destination for tourists and holidaymakers. The principal attractions are the extensive sandy beach which at low tide extends past Brea Hill to Daymer Bay, and a great many water sports. The Camel Estuary lends itself well to windsurfing, sailing and boating and fishing. There is a well-known sailing club on the waterfront. There is even an annual swimming race across the Camel.

A small ferry and a boat taxi operate across the river to the larger town of Padstow, and this is a major source of tourist traffic through Rock. There are a large number of holiday homes in the area, as well as a number of retail outlets such as the Rock Bakery, home of the best Cornish pasties and Di’s Dairy delicatessen. Rock is also home to Sharp's Brewery, an independent Real Ale Brewery founded in the mid 1990s. Rock is often known as Chelsea on Sea due to the high number of rahs that come and stay in the area.

The name Rock is said to originate from the rock quarry, which is now a car park, used as a source of ballast for sailing boats which had dropped off cargo at Padstow.

The name Camel comes from the Cornish language for "crooked one", a reference to its winding course. Although the Rock Sailing and Water-ski club use a Dromedary Camel as their logo, they got it wrong!
