Port Quinn is a small fishing community known by some as 'the village that died' after the entire male population disappeared mysteriously in the 19th century. Once home to a fishing fleet, legend has it that all were lost at sea.
Doyden Castle is at the entrance to Port Quinn and looks more like a castellated folly than a proper castle. Featured in the 1970’s BBC drama Poldark it overlooks Lundy bay and was built in 1830. Access is by a narrow cliff-edge track s, but if you want a little time on your own this is the place for you. It also starred in the 1990’s film “From the Sea”.
